Two FIREMAN researchers were recently awarded prestigious grants.

On December 2019, Dick Carrillo-Melgarejo (LUT) was awarded a 5K€ research grant from the Nokia Foundation for his research towards improving the design of wireless communication systems for energy systems and industrial automation. More information can be found here.

On February 2020, Daniel Gutierrez Rojas (LUT) was awarded a 3K€ research grant from the HPY Research Foundation for his research towards adaptive protection and fault detection in electricity grids based on 5G wireless communication.

Congratulations to you both!

FIREMAN project coordinator, Pedro Nardelli, participated in the EU-US Frontiers of Engineering symposium, held on November 18-20 in Stockholm, Sweden.

About 60 outstanding engineers under the age of 45 met for an intensive 2-1/2 day symposium to discuss cutting-edge developments in four areas: 5G and Internet of Things, Materials Engineering Enabled by Advances in Imaging, Systems Approaches to a Clean Environment, and Smart Manufacturing. The event facilitates international and cross-disciplinary research collaboration, promotes the transfer of new techniques and approaches across disparate engineering fields, and encourages the creation of a transatlantic network of world-class engineers.

On August 29th, the first face-to-face meeting of FIREMAN was held in Oulu, Finland, organized by the University of Oulu. The project coordinator, Pedro Juliano Nardelli (LUT), introduced all FIREMAN participants and described their role and responsibility in each WP. During the meeting, the main goals and expected outcomes of the project were outlined and issues related to the technical work, management and finance of the FIREMAN project were discussed. The participants mostly focused on the recently-started WP2 and WP3 and engaged in technical discussions related to the project tasks. WP leaders presented the up-to-date progress and detailed the planned contributions for the following months.

Three FIREMAN papers will be presented at the 16th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems (ISWCS), 27-30 August 2019, in Oulu, Finland, in the context of the special session "IoT in Energy Systems and Industrial Environments".
